Apply to be a Trustee

There has never been a better time to be involved with ICUsteps. Like most small charities, we began with the Board of Trustees also undertaking all the charity's work as well as guiding the organisation's direction, making strategic decisions and ensuring we fulfil our mission.

At this key moment in our evolution we’re looking to expand by growing our volunteer base so we can delegate many of our day-to-day tasks, spread the workload, and allow our Board of Trustees more time to focus on strategic issues.

Joining ICUsteps as a Trustee offers a unique opportunity to actively promote our work and mission. As a Trustee, you will play a key role in setting our priorities and work programme, ensuring effective governance for the organisation and shaping our direction.

If you're passionate about creating a positive impact and improving the outcomes of those affected by critical illness, we welcome your interest in becoming an ICUsteps Trustee.

What's involved

Board meetings are held online every three months with the AGM being held in the autumn, but most of the work is done between meetings.

You may be asked to guide, advise and oversee the work of volunteers on a particular topic and report back to the Board with updates, or raise any issues that arise for more urgent discussion.

You’ll have opportunities to represent us at events and committees, help expand our reach and impact within the community. Your feedback and insights gained from engagements and meetings will be invaluable in shaping our future practices.

To support this, you'll need to gain a good awareness of our history, activities, brand guidelines and ethos to be able to advocate for the charity and those we support.

Trustee skills

We’re a friendly and understanding bunch, so a sense of humour will be appreciated. If you want to help others, are willing to listen, network and build relationships and are naturally compassionate and empathetic, you’ll get on well with us.

If you have prior experience with charity governance, HR matters, diversity and disability, or managing and growing a network of volunteers, we'd be especially keen to hear from you.

Most of our work is done virtually, so you'll need to have good IT skills, internet access and your own computer. The ability to collaborate using digital tools and platforms such as Teams will be needed.

Good communication skills, the ability to organise your own time, a willingness to ask questions whenever necessary and to respond to enquiries in a timely manner are all skills that will contribute to being a successful Trustee.

Trustees need to be over 18, have no criminal record, be willing to undergo a DBS check, and complete our safe-guarding training.

What we'll provide

Trustees will be provided with an ICUsteps email address and an Office 365 license. You’ll be supported as you get up to speed with the organisation, the role and the tasks you’re asked to get involved with.

What can ICUsteps offer you?

All Trustees and volunteers will be able to get guidance and support from the ICUsteps Volunteer Handbook and are entitled to claim expenses for work undertaken for the charity.

Though we are a small charity, we have grown a good reputation in the critical care community. The greatest thing we can offer you is the opportunity to put your skills, expertise and enthusiasm into a cause which will help guide and support many thousands of people in one of the darkest episodes of their life.
